International History

Women in the Wind is an international, all female motorcycle club founded in 1979 by AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame inductee Becky Brown.

The organization seeks to unite women motorcyclists, promote a positive image of women and motorcycling and educate its members on motorcycle safety and maintenance. It has over 100 chapters in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Portugal, and is the largest women's motorcycle organization of its kind, with 10 countries participating as of 2020.

Founder Becky Brown's bike is on permanent display at the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa.

Our Chapter's History

In 2008, Cary Catchpole came to me with an idea to start a women's riding group.  She had been checking out an organization called Women in the Wind and was wanting to know my thoughts on possibly starting a chapter in Topeka. On October 16, 2008, it became a reality and the Oz Outlawz Chapter of Women in the Wind was organized.  The charter members were Cary Catchpole, Carey Griffin-Wingett, Glenda Kelly, Jeanie Akulow, Linda Schulz, Patti Henneberg, Tym Frear, abd Vicki Allen. Summer International get together was in Kansas City, Mo. in June 2009 and you can see how many of us attended it. For the first year this was great. We have now been active for 11 years and growing and changing every day.

Patti "Ladyblu" Henneberg

This chapter was formed over 10 years ago in Cary Catchpole's living room. The name was chosen from two different ideas. Vincy Palmer brought up that something from Wizard of Oz would be neat and we all agreed. Then Linda Schultz told a story of her first group ride with a bunch of the Kickstart guys. They rode to the Harley plant in Kansas City. There was an event going on, with cops directing traffic. Well the Harley shop is on the Missouri side of KC and Linda had forgotten her helmet. So the guys all told her, just get in the middle of us and we’ll get you out of here. Linda said, “my first ride and I’m already an OUTLAW!” And the rest is history!  " Vicki Allen"
